A landmark year of BEE mega-deals

Last year was a landmark period for South Africa's ambitious economic transformation programme, with the value of black economic empowerment (BEE) transactions concluded climbing to R96 billion, up 71 percent from 2006, according to Ernst & Young's annual mergers and acquisitions (M&A) report.

The review says empowerment has played a significant role in breaking up traditional corporate formations and ensuring dynamic deal flow in mergers and acquisitions, and 2007 was no exception, with 153 BEE transactions sealed.
