Anglo - American: All but fully empowered

Anglo American is to a large extent off the black economic empowerment (BEE) hook. That was clear when Anglo secured all its new order mining rights - except for two projects - from the department of minerals & energy earlier this year, and the point is hammered home in its 2007 BEE report released this month.

Using its economies of scale as SA's largest company, Anglo seems to have secured a wholesale endorsement of its BEE record by bulking up socioeconomic development initiatives across its SA operations. That position is envied by other mining entities, which have to endure a microscopic interrogation of their BEE credentials by the department.
