Banks juggle red tape and best practice ...

Today's big five bank chief executives face a far broader range of challenges than they could have imagined when they began their banking careers 20 to 30 years ago.

But they are a resilient bunch and each has risen to the challenges -- and managed to grow his business at the same time.
Although commonly swept up in the collective term "the big four", as though they are similar entities, Absa, FirstRand, Nedbank and Standard Bank offer four remarkably different interpretations of banking. Then there's Investec, South Africa's only listed investment bank, which has a unique definition of banking.
