Battle for the Scorpions a war of words

The Old Assembly chamber in parliament is imbued with a sense of history-in-the-making. Through the years its panelled walls have framed events ranging from the assassination of HF Verwoerd to the forging of the constitution.

This week, those who gathered in the chamber were there for another significant legislative moment: the public hearings on the ANC's plan to dissolve the investigative unit that once was the government's greatest hope for fighting priority crime.
