BEE company acquires rights in rugby union

Hot on the heels of the Springboks' heroics in France, local rugby received a shot in the arm -- in more ways than one. For the first time in the history of the game, a black economic empowerment (BEE) company has acquired the controlling rights of a Rugby Union.

The Royal Bafokeng Sports Holding has answered the call from black South Africans for equal representation in rugby. After the recent acquisition of Silver Stars football club, it has now bought a 49.9% share in the Potchefstroom-based Leopards Rugby Union. The Leopards will be renamed the Platinum Leopards.
