BEE investment in mining set for uncertain future
Doomsday predictions have been promulgated for the future of black economic empowerment (BEE) in the South African mining sector. This has been prompted by the global financial crisis, characterised by falling share prices and a drop in commodity values, that has left the mining industry particularly vulnerable.
Many BEE deals that were funded on the back of equity are unable to generate the cash flows needed to service their debt. These companies have to find ways to refinance these transactions or hand their assets over to lenders.
