Celebrating the woman behind the Moringa project, Mavis Mathabatha, and unveiling new research.
Tooseng, GaMphahlele, Limpopo - On the morning of 28 June 2011, farmers, government officials, rural community stakeholders and activists, as well as experts in the field of food security and nutrition, will gather in Tooseng village in Limpopo province to celebrate and honour Mavis Mathabatha for becoming the Department of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries (DAFF) National Female Entrepreneur of the Year.
University of Witwatersrand Dept of Chemistry will announce the results of an extensive nutritional analysis of Lammangata Moringa's leaves. In addition, the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) will award Lammangata Moringa a certificate declaring its products safe for consumption and commercial sale in South Africa.
The event will start at 10h00 and will take place at Sedikong sa Lerato, the drop-in centre for vulnerable children founded by Mathabatha in Tooseng in 2005, and the site of the Lammangata Moringa project.
Lammangata Moringa is a community-based project founded by Mathabatha in 2007 and launched in 2009 which harnesses the nutritional and healing powers of the Moringa oleifera tree to stem malnutrition and food insecurity in rural areas of Limpopo. Lammangata disseminates Moringa seedlings for free to rural households, educates community members about personal nutrition and Moringa's benefits, and produces 100% All-Natural Moringa Leaf Powder & Tea, an unparalleled super-food and herbal supplement that meets many of the daily nutritional requirements for human health. Thus far, Lammangata Moringa has given over 6000 seedlings to rural families around the greater Lebowakgomo region and to dozens of child-care projects across Limpopo province.
Many people have called Moringa Oleifera the "Miracle Tree" because of its remarkable nutritional and healing properties. The leaves of Moringa Oleifera are loaded with essential nutrients, far surpassing the vitamin and mineral content of carrots, spinach, bananas, and oranges combined. It also contains more protein and calcium than milk, plus all nine essential amino acids.
Now, for the first time ever, the benefits of Moringa are being made available from a local source to the people of South Africa.
