De Beers Unveils Voorspoed Diamond Mine
De Beers opened its Voorspoed Diamond Mine in South Africa yesterday in the presence of Buyelwa Sonjica, South African Minister of Minerals and Energy. Voorspoed is considered to be De Beers' first diamond mine representing the new generation of mines that sets new standards in environmental and social performance.
Voorspoed is the first De Beers diamond mine to be opened in South Africa since DBCM entered into the groundbreaking BBBEE transaction with Ponahalo in 2006. De Beers noted that the diamond mine features a unique environmental, rehabilitation and eventual closure plan. Voorspoed is said to have a far-reaching environmental and social investment program that will impact on the communities in which De Beers and Ponahalo operate.
