Eskom wants to use its large contracts to boost local business

Over the past few months Eskom has awarded two of the biggest contracts in SA's engineering industry to plug the country's gaping electricity hole: R38,5bn to Japan's Hitachi Africa and R26bn to France's Alstom, to supply turbines and boilers at its new Medupi and Kusile power stations.

With many more of these large contracts set to be awarded in Eskom's plan to double SA's electricity capacity over the next 20 years, it is using its vast procurement budget to develop SA's own engineering sector.
