Massmart heps before BEE deal up 17%

South African retailer Massmart reported on Thursday a 16.8 percent rise in half-year headline earnings per share, excluding a black empowerment deal, as its diverse businesses helped offset lower spending by middle-income consumers.

Massmart, whose businesses in 14 African countries range from distributing consumer goods to retailing home improvement supplies and liquor, said headline EPS was 402 cents.
