MIC - Largest Single Distribution Ever Made To A Beneficiary Trust

MIC MAKES LARGEST SINGLE DISTRIBUTION EVER MADE TO A BENEFICIARY TRUST
R245 million single distribution

BEE investment group, Mineworkers Investment Company (MIC), yesterday announced that it has made a distribution of R245 million to its shareholder and beneficiary trust, the Mineworkers Investment Trust (MIT). This represents the largest single South African distribution ever made by an empowerment investment company to a beneficiary trust.

"We are extremely proud of this milestone in our 13th year of existence. We were one of the early entrants in the BEE arena in 1995 with an aim to create a sustainable asset base for the benefit of mine, energy and construction workers and their dependents. Today, we have become a premium BBBEE player with financial skills that's been used to not only grow investments, but to put back into society through distributions to MIT. Since inception, MIC has disbursed R122,5 million directly to MIT, which has in turn advanced the money to fund its social development programmes in the areas of education, poverty alleviation and micro-enterprise development.

"With this distribution, our disbursements to the MIT has swelled to about R370 million, which will allow MIT to continue the excellent job they have done in uplifting communities for many years," said MIC CEO Paul Nkuna.

The amount will be made as a lump sum, invested into an annuity fund. This will provide solid and secure cash flows to MIT over a period of five years.

MIT currently represents over a million people across South Africa. The MIT's projects focus on poverty alleviation, local economic development, enterprise development and job creation. MIT delivers on its mandate through the Mineworkers Development Agency, the JB Marks Education Trust Fund and the Elijah Barayi Memorial Training Centre.

MIC has current assets under management of over R10 billion and was awarded the BusinessMap Top Unlisted BEE Company of the year in 2006, and the Barloworld/WBS Top BEE Deal (Peermont) in 2008.

"MIC does not make passive investments. It is an active equity partner, playing a hands-on role in our investments and bringing the relevant internal financial and economic skills to our involvement in these companies. But, we have never lost sight of why we were established - for the benefit of MIT and its beneficiaries," said MIC executive director Tshidi Madima. -Ends-
