Mining licence 'quietly' issued

THE Department of Minerals and Energy Affairs seemed more afraid of the Sicilian-descended Caruso family, which heads Australian mining company Mineral Commodities, than the Human Rights Commission, opponents of the controversial Xolobeni mining licence claimed.

John Clarke, a lawyer and social worker representing the Xolobeni community, said the department (DME) had behaved "extremely suspiciously".
