More than 70% of SA mining rights still have to be converted
Roughly three in ten South African mining operations have applied for new-order mining rights, and now the Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) warns that the 2008 class of converted is too small - especially since the process of changing old-order mining rights into new-order mining rights is already more than four years old, with less than seven months remaining for companies to ensure they still have something to mine, come May next year.
The DME says it is ready and waiting for mining companies to lodge their applications for new-order rights, warning that the deadline of April next year will not be extended.
