Non-profits seek clarity on scoring points for BEE

Most of these NPOs have received considerable pressure from corporate donors to apply for broad-based BEE ratings. There is confusion over whether NPOs are treated differently to public benefit organisations (PBOs). They also want to know if it is better to be registered as a trust or a section 21 company for BEE purposes.

When it comes to ownership, NPOs are affected in two ways. First, if they participate in an ownership transaction they need to have clearly identified black beneficiaries. If they want to claim bonus points as a broad-based group, they have to meet the requirements of the codes of good practice for broad-based BEE.
