R16bn BEE 'flagship' has global ambitions

The always affable Anglo American South Africa CEO, Lazarus Zim, battled last week to mask his displeasure at suggestions that the Kumba Resources’ black economic-empowerment (BEE) deal was all one-way traffic in favour of the mining giant...



Undeniably, Anglo had moved a step closer to getting what it really wanted from Kumba – its highly-rated iron-ore assets (see associated story) – but Zim insisted, too, that the R9,2- billion transaction was not simply about self- interest and legal compliance.
