Stats SA comes a cropper again

Economists are once again questioning the credibility of Statistics SA figures - this time in relation to last month's producer price data, released last week. The agency itself spoke of problems and warned that components of the data could be revised.

The release on Thursday showed a big jump in producer inflation - to 11.8 percent in the 12 months to March, from 11.3 percent in February. As producer inflation is seen as a leading indicator of consumer inflation, the unexpected acceleration shocked the markets.
