When broad-based BEE muzzles the black voice

THE evolution of black economic empowerment (BEE) over the years, including the recently announced Sasol Inzalo transaction, has been an interesting and important journey in the transition toward economic transformation.

If we look back to the beginning, and for many years hence, BEE transactions were characterised by a corporate preference to transact with a handful of empowerment partners. This model met with extreme criticism on the basis that it served to enrich only a few.
